CULTURAL OCCUPATIONS BY SEX AND AGE

OVERVIEW

According to the 2011 Census, 5,796 persons in Tasmania had a cultural occupation as their main job. This was 3% of all persons employed in Tasmania. The highest employing cultural occupations were ministers of religion (378), library technician (373) and graphic designer (330). The occupations with the largest number of persons employed nationally were graphic designers and ministers of religion.

Of all persons employed in cultural occupations nationally, 2% resided in Tasmania. The cultural occupation with the largest proportion of employed persons in Tasmania was gallery or museum technician (10%). Less than 1% of dancer or choreographers, actors, make-up artists, fashion designers and multimedia designers in Australia resided in Tasmania.

EMPLOYMENT BY SEX

Of persons employed in cultural occupations in Tasmania, 3,082 (53%) were male and 2,714 (47%) were female. There were also more males than females employed in cultural occupations nationally.

The cultural occupations employing 50 persons or more with the largest proportion of males were signwriters (92%), printing machinists (91%), printers, nfd (91%), web developers (84%), architectural draftspersons (81%) and architects (81%). The same cultural occupations had the largest proportion of males nationally.

The cultural occupations employing 50 persons or more with the largest proportion of females were library technicians (93%), dance teachers (private tuition) (89%), library assistants (88%) and librarians (83%). The same cultural occupations had the largest proportion of females nationally.

EMPLOYMENT BY AGE

Persons aged 15 to 24 years made up 9% of persons employed in cultural occupations in Tasmania, which was similar to the national average of 10%. The cultural occupations with the largest number of persons aged 15 to 24 years were music teacher (private tuition) (43), graphic designer (39) and musician (instrumental) (29). Graphic designer and music teacher (private tuition) were two of the three highest employing cultural occupations for persons aged 15 to 24 years nationally.

The cultural occupations with the largest number of persons aged 55 years and over in Tasmania were minister of religion (150), library technician (139), architect (69), architectural draftsperson (66) and music teacher (private tuition) (56). The cultural occupation employing the largest number of persons aged 55 years and over nationally was minister of religion.

Of those cultural occupations that have more than 50 persons aged 55 years and over, painter (visual arts) (48%) had the largest proportion of persons in Tasmania, followed by author (44%), picture framer (43%) and librarian (41%). Persons aged 55 years and over accounted for 25% of those employed in cultural occupations in Tasmania, which was higher than the national average of 18%.
